Japanese Pottery & Ceramics Melbourne | Temaki Sushi — Handcrafted Tableware

The Art of
Japanese Pottery

Every piece of tableware is handcrafted at our studio, using clays sourced from Shiga Prefecture, Japan.

Where Earth Meets
Intention

At Temaki Sushi, we believe a dish is not complete until it rests in the perfect vessel. The texture, weight, and warmth of the ceramics transform a meal into a multi-sensory experience.

Every bowl, plate, and cup is formed by hand at our Ferndale pottery studio. The process is slow, deliberate, and rooted in a tradition that spans centuries—ensuring no two pieces are ever truly alike.

The Legacy of
Shigaraki-yaki

Our materials are sourced exclusively from Shiga Prefecture, Japan—home to one of Japan's legendary Six Ancient Kilns.

For over 800 years, Shigaraki-yaki has been revered for its earthy textures, natural ash glazes, and the philosophy of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in imperfection.

By bringing this clay to Australian soil, we bridge two landscapes, creating tableware that honours both traditions.

Beauty in imperfection

The Fern
Imprint

Before the clay dries, we forage native ferns from the forest floor of Ferndale. Each frond is gently laid upon the soft surface and pressed by hand.

When the fern is lifted away, it leaves behind a delicate fossil—a permanent imprint of the Dandenong Ranges. This intricate texture connects your fingertips directly to the land.

Truly One of a Kind

Because nature never repeats itself, no two pieces of our tableware are identical. Each plate tells its own story.
